Refining Surgical Precision in a Controlled, Risk-Free Environment

The Department of Cardiac Surgery at NICVD operates a dedicated Wet Lab Workshop designed to provide surgical residents with repetitive, deliberate practice in essential open-heart surgical techniques prior to live patient operations.

From microscopic coronary artery anastomosis to complex valve sizing and spatial chamber navigation, trainees develop tactile muscle memory, instrumental ergonomics, and stereoscopic vision under the continuous mentorship of senior faculty surgeons.

Curriculum Competencies

  • ✓ Three-dimensional intracardiac surgical anatomy
  • ✓ End-to-side and end-to-end vascular micro-anastomosis
  • ✓ Aortic and mitral valve repair & replacement techniques
  • ✓ Tissue handling, suture tension management, knot tying
  • ✓ Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS)
Structured Curriculum

Core Surgical Training Modules

Each module is tailored to the progressive stages of the MS Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery residency program.

Module 01

Porcine Heart Dissection Simulator

Hands-on gross dissection of ex-vivo porcine hearts providing realistic tissue consistency and human-comparable anatomy:

  • Aortic root isolation & coronary ostia mapping
  • Left and right atriotomy chamber exploration
  • Mitral and tricuspid valve subvalvular chordal architecture
  • Interventricular and interatrial septal dissection
Module 02

Vascular Anastomosis & Micro-Suturing

Precision microvascular suturing simulating coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) anastomoses:

  • End-to-side coronary anastomosis using 7-0 / 8-0 polypropylene
  • End-to-end vascular conduit construction & parachute technique
  • Ergonomic needle driving with 2.5x to 3.5x surgical loupes
  • Hydrostatic leak testing & anastomosis lumen inspection
Module 03

Heart Valve Repair & Replacement Simulation

Tactile simulation of prosthetic and native valvular procedures:

  • Aortic & mitral annulus sizing and calibration
  • Pledgeted horizontal mattress suture placement
  • Mechanical bileaflet and bovine pericardial valve seating
  • Mitral annuloplasty ring implantation & neo-chordae sizing
Module 04

Faculty Mentorship & OSATS Validation

Structured evaluation and direct feedback from senior cardiac surgery professors:

  • Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) scoring
  • Video debriefing of suture spacing, bite depth, and tension
  • Troubleshooting tear-outs, intimal flaps, and graft kinking
  • Pre-operative surgical clearance for clinical case assistance
