Welcome to the Department of Cardiac Surgery of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Dhaka. It is Bangladesh's leading government institution dedicated to cardiovascular surgical care. Our department is committed to providing comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered surgical treatment for a wide spectrum of heart diseases. Since the establishment of NICVD, the Department of Cardiac Surgery has played a pivotal role in advancing cardiac surgical care in Bangladesh.
The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) is a government run tertiary hospital in Bangladesh to provide health care services to cardiac and vascular patients. It is located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagor Thana, Dhaka. The institute was established in 1978 with the aim of establishing modern cardiovascular care services in the country and to develop trained manpower in this field for the need of the country. Besides rendering the best possible services and care for the cardiac patients, Post Graduate medical courses for the doctors were introduced in this Institute in July 1982.
Obtaining post graduate degree from this Institute many of them presently engaged in providing specialized cardiac care services in different Govt. & Non Govt. Hospitals in Bangladesh and abroad. Our multidisciplinary team of experienced cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals work together to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care using modern surgical techniques and internationally accepted clinical standards. The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases was established in 1978 to ensure complete cardiac care to patients as well as training for physicians, nurses and technicians involved with delivery of cardiac care to meet the increasing demand.
The first cardiac case was a closed mitral valvotomy performed by Prof. M Nabi Alam Khan on 9th July 1980.
On the 18th of September 1981, the first-ever open-heart operation in Bangladesh was performed at ICVD. An 18-year-old college student hailing from Sitakunda, Chittagong, diagnosed with Secundum-Type Atrial Septal Defect was selected as a suitable candidate for the first operation. The surgical team comprised Dr. Komei Saji of Japan, Prof. M Nabi Alam Khan, Prof. S R Khan, and Dr. Minhaz Uddin. The anesthetists were Prof. Khalilur Rahman and Dr. Nurul Islam.
Postgraduate medical courses, including the MS (Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery) program, were officially introduced at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in July 1985.

The China-Bangladesh Joint Cardiovascular Disease Clinic was officially inaugurated at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Bangladesh on Tuesday (December 2, 2025). It is being considered a significant addition to the history of health cooperation between the two countries.
